Senor
X - "Metal Surgeon"Review By Dude Rockstar Email: bigbadmoon777@hotmail.com Assumptions. My mother said, "when you assume, it makes an ass out of you and me." In deference to my mother, I begin this review with an assumption: I assume you will visit Senor X's site and purchase his CD after you read this review. Senor X represents a genre of music you may think has "come and gone". A quick read of his influences (Marty Friedman, Kirk Hammett, Jake E. Lee, Dave Mustaine, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Schuldiner, Toni Iommi, and James Murphy) could lead you to an erroneous conclusion. You could easily conclude that you've heard this stuff before. You would be wrong. Senor X carries an interesting torch with his songwriting. Senor X is the next coming of Chris Poland. Senor X is an amalgamation-of, not result-of his influences. It is (with all due respect to Mr. X) unfair to categorize his music with his influences. Senor X demands his own genre. Listen to, "Disruptor". "Disruptor" is a 3:27 tune of the "get out your notebook 'cause you'll need to follow along" variety. ("Eclectic" is a fair descriptor.) The early clean-channel vibe is "sort of" Marty Friedman. The riffing directly after that is "sort of" James Hetfield. 1:13 to 1:34 could be lifted from Megadeth's Hangar 18. At 1:43, get a kiss from Marty Friedman's "dragon". The clean-channel chiming at 1:51 is Jason Becker's influence, if anyone's. "Disruptor" closes on a unique, and unexpected stereo-panned, harmoniously-dissonant closing chord.
If you like Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, or the oft-underrated Alex Skolnick (Testament), you must purchase Senor X's CD. Now, don't make an "ass" out of me. |
